Today’s Observations – January 8, 2008

Here are a few items to look at this morning, January 8th:

  • Our Illinois State Treasurer, Alexi Giannoulias, is in the news again today. Illinois will be lending securities from the state portfolio, netting one million dollars annually. A million here. A million there. Pretty soon it adds up to real money, to paraphrase legendary Illinois Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen. And once again this outstanding young man is taking the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office to a new level (full disclosure, I was an early and enthusiastic supporter). He campaigned on a theme of running the Treasurer’s Office efficiently and effectively for the citizens of Illinois. Alexi is destined for higher office.
  • Not only is Hillary Clinton slipping badly in the latest New Hampshire polls and the latest South Carolina polls, the latest USA Today/Gallup poll is now reporting that Clinton’s once mighty firewall, the national polls, is quickly disappearing.
